A 2D side scroller game I worked in my first year at Sheridan College.

The game was realized during a 5 days design week where we randomly formed a group and designed a game based on the challenge.

And the challenge for the week was Create a sense of feeling.

So, we chose to design a game with the intention of creating a player experience of “being scared”

I was mainly responsible for creating all In-game house environments.

Welcome to try it if you are interested!

Game Environment

With our game, we wanted to create an environment where we took familiar objects, locations, and concepts and made it unsettling and uncomfortable.

To create this feeling of discomfort, we created a lonely atmosphere; the house’s colour palate is somber, the only noise that can be heard are your footsteps, and every room is lit up by 1 or 2 lightbulb(s).

During a playthrough, there will be sudden noises: things thumping, glass clinking, and rain pouring. All of which are regular sounds but because of the atmosphere we set, players will feel uneasy. All of this is happening while some eerie music is playing in the background which builds more tension.

We have also created situations that aren't possible like the watering can in an unexpected location and then later a flower pot being on top of the ceiling. We wanted players to think the fearful thought of  “what is going on?”

We carry this tension all the way to the end of the game where, when the player finishes the tasks, will get a new task which says to “GO TO SLEEP '' in a violent red and different handwriting from the rest of the tasks. The results for finishing the task is an end screen saying “The end” and nothing happening. We intend to leave players fearful of what just happened and what the whole experience meant.
